Helfer is a native of the rural area of Donalda, Alberta, Canada in Canada, the children of Dennis Helfer and Elaine Helfer. Her parents are of German, English, Swedish and Norwegian descent. She studied at William E. Hay Composite High School in Stettler, Alberta. Alongside her siblings Trena Tammy Tara she lived in the farm owned by her family. While standing in a queue at the theatre the scout of a modelling agency observed Helfer.
